The smoke of time, it blinds our eyes
Our voices’ echoes fade leaving only shadows behind
But once we looked to the stars overhead without fear
Til They Who Walk Behind the Skies, they met our gaze with a withering glare
...and still we did not look away
As men we rose, as vermin they cast us down
And then we saw their face: that hideous majesty
And then we heard their voice: that first and only word
They froze the sun, then tore our works from the ground and rained them on our heads
Until the earth became drunk with our blood
“They shrunk our souls and blacked our skies. Spoiled our seed and turned our fields to ash.”
We dreamed and woke up as worms on the corpse of a rotting world.

Our fathers worked in stone, torn from the living earth
In dark satanic mines entire generations were sacrificed
And still the stones rose higher while below their builders crawled
And honed their gnarled fangs, and gnawed their rivals’ bones
But it was not enough
So we gave them blood
We gave them sight
We gave them voice
We gave them life
Unflinching armies
Untiring slaves
Unending joy
War without pain
Careless emperors
Commanding with a wave
Without mercy
Without shame
We were magnificent
As we reclined
They spread their grasp
As they grew stronger
Our blood grew thin
When our feeble blasphemies
No longer satisfied
Our familiars
Rose up to cast us down
These twisted shapes of living stone
These walking ruins: these were our foes
But their faces were our own

As we hungered, the seasons bowed
As we drank, the seas unwound
As we warred, the heavens shook
As we fell, we rose again
As we sang, the walls regrew
As we laughed, our eyes were cruel
“As we dreamed, we shaped the world”
But it was not enough
Transcending flesh was to be our final art:
We made the world a gallows, then made weapons of ourselves:
Crawling castles, laughing towers, chattering plagues, beasts of steel and flesh
Look on this world: this ashen jewel
We bathed in blood and scorched it bare
We laughed and died
Behind the skies, no god will meet our eyes.

Like rats we circle these pits of cold ash
These creaking rustscapes, these dead satanic mines
Sniffing, cloudy-eyed
Scarred hands tracing
Scarred stone slabs
Abscessed tongues tasting ageless rot
What proud funereal lords put torch to these pyres?
What starry-eyed priests blessed these charred shrines?
What curses, what cries, what empty promises
Rose up on the wind and smothered the world like a shroud?
What burned here?
Did these ashes fall from a dead sky
Or rise like a phoenix to tear through the clouds?
Are we tending a grave, or waving goodbye at the edge of black seas of infinity?

Rake

Well I used to wake and run with the moon
I lived like a rake and a young man
I covered my lovers with flowers and wounds
my laughter the devil would frighten
The sun she would come and beat me back down
but every cruel day had its nightfall
I'd welcome the stars with wine and guitars
full of fire and forgetful
My body was sharp and the dark air clean
and outrage my joyful companion
whispering women how sweet did they seem
kneeling for me to command them
And time was like water but I was the sea
I'd have never noticed it changing
except for the turning of night into day
and the turning of day into cursing
You look at me now, and don't think I don't know
what all your eyes are a saying
Does he want us to believe these ravings and lies
they're just tricks that his brains been a playing
A lover of women why can't hardly stand
he's bent and he's broken, he's broken
I've fallen it's true but I say unto you
hold your tongues until after I've spoken
I was taking my pride in the pleasures I'd knew
I laughed and thought I'd be forgiven
but my laughter turned 'round eyes blazing and
said my friend, we're holding a wedding
I buried my face but it spoke once again
the night to the day we're a binding
And now the dark air is like fire on my skin, even the moonlight is blinding
